For the best part of a year the Plugs have been busy transforming Turner Broadcasting’s Cartoonito website to accompany the channel’s re-launch with a brand new look and some shiny new content.

Cartoonito has been making big waves this year – rolling out beyond the UK across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, taking the brand’s distribution to 125 million homes in 112 different countries. That’s a very big audience indeed! We started the project with a long hard look at what Turner was after. We conducted a series of interviews with key stakeholders, did cart-sorting exercises in order to establish their content priorities and even got all the top execs designing their own home page!

Then came the redesign and build. We partnered with Drupal specialists Atchai who put together the technical build of the site, delivering Turner Broadcasting the kind of flexible CMS that is necessary to manage huge amounts of content across multiple territories. The website contains videos, games, activities and songs featuring top pre-school brands such as Fireman Sam, Baby Looney Toons and Bananas in Pyjamas. Our redesigned templates include specially designed character based backgrounds, child friendly bubble icons and a simplified pathway for children and parents to find exactly what they’re looking for. We then handed it over to Turner to populate with content.

Part of our brief was also to deliver some new content to feature on the website, so we made three brand new Flash games and a special application to help Cartoonito to celebrate kids birthdays on air. Fireman Sam’s Training Tower is a very simple platform game, where Fireman Trainee Elvis must climb up ladders to put out the fires. There are 3 levels and Elvis must complete all the tasks before ringing the fire bell at the top of the training tower.

Baby Looney Tunes’s Bedtime Bubbles was inspired by our BAFTA-winning Big and Small game where you have to brush Big or Small’s teeth. In this super-cute version of the game, Baby Daffy, Taz and Bugs are all bouncing around and Lulu can’t seem to calm them down and get them to sleep. It’s up to you to brush Bugs’s teeth, comb Taz’s fur and wash Daffy so they all go to bed and sleep soundly.

Jambo Jamm is another brilliant music game in the mould of our Top Cat Alley Band and Tom and Jerry Suppertime Serenade games. Choose the instruments for the gang to play and enjoy their reggae-calypso style! Try to catch the hiding dodos while you’re there!

Finally, viewer birthdays have always been a huge feature of Cartoonito’s on-air content. Our Birthday Club app allows parents to create bespoke birthday cards featuring photos of their children, and a selection of Cartoonito artwork. You can then either print your card or send it to the website and channel to be published or featured on air.
